I have just been reading an interesting article in last week’s Saturday papers, in which Marina Fogle writes movingly about her marriage to Ben Fogle and how she believes an annual check-up with a therapist would help many marriages. “ We realised it is as important as going to the dentist, we see Doctors, hygienists, mechanics and optometrists before there is a problem, and I’d argue that our emotional well being is significantly more important than our ears, eyes and teeth.” Marina wrote the article after having spoken to a friend of a friend called Cara. Cara’s step sister, who was going through a divorce herself at the time, gave Cara and her husband-to-be a voucher for 10 counselling sessions as a wedding present. Cara said:- “On our own we often don’t have the time or energy to tackle a certain problem, seeing a therapist forces us to think about our relationship, to really listen to the other and to try to understand what it is the other needs….we have found that our issues can be tackled before they grow into something insurmountable.” Marina and her husband Ben have been seeing a counsellor since their baby was still born last summer and have found that it has also helped them better understand each other. Marina believes that had they seen the counsellor earlier they would have matured emotionally sooner, been better able to support each other and possibly dealt with the challenges they have faced together more efficiently. Marina concludes the article by saying something that I have banged on about for a long time which is that we all spend hundreds if not thousands of pounds on things; push chairs, carry cots, private education etc., but the thing that is most important and will result in a healthy adult is a secure loving environment in which to grow up. She says:- “If a couple of hours a year can help achieve this, then why on earth wouldn’t you?” Halleluiah to that. hink about our relationship, to really listen to the other and to try to understand what it is the other needs….we have found that our issues can be tackled before they grow into something insurmountable.” Marina and her husband Ben have been seeing a counsellor since their baby was still born last summer and have found that it has also helped them better understand each other.
